Marshall Cup Final
Newport Pagnell Town 4 MK Dons 1
Saturday, 24 July 2010
Newport claimed the Marshall Cup with this win over a Dons side at Willen Road. The Dons side consisting of mainly youth and reserve players but still finished the game with 4 first team players in the squad.
It was the Swans to show that they were going to be no Non League easy push over when Darren Lynch came close with a header.
Darren Lynch did find the back of the net when he fired the Swans into a 24th minute lead from a nicely taken free kick. The keeper getting and hand to the ball but only to palm onto the post then into the goal.
Daren dykes had a golden oppitunity to double the Swans lead when he met a pass for him to sky from 6 yards out.
MK Dons produced a great save out of the new Swans goal keeper from a powerful shot.
Daren dykes made amends for his first half miss when he did double the lead two minutes before the hour mark.
MK Dons replied with some pressure and a nice shot from the number 10, making the Swans keeper having to dive to turn the ball around the post for a corner.
Vinny Shrieves added a third for Newport after 68 minutes when he pounced on a rebound to give Newport Pagnell a 3-0 lead.
A tired looking Adam Chickson replied for the Dons ten minutes from the end. His long range well placed shot beat the Swans keeper producing the best goal of the game.
This encourage the Dons to push forward and for 10 minutes they pushed the Swans back in their own half causing Newport to defend including clearing the ball off their own line. First teamer Flanagan was brought on as a sub whom made a big difference to there attacking football. He came close to scoring a couple times himself.
Jordan Spruce saw then red when he kicked out after a late challenge on him. The Swans down to 10 men.
Shrieves had the last word converting a 90th minute penalty. The MK Dons defender handle the ball back to his keeper as he fell to give Newport a pen.
The Swans were worthy of their win and for the first 70 minutes played better than the Dons. It wasn’t until a couple more first team players were brought on for the Dons they then woke up and pressed Newport Pagnell. Well done Newport!!!!!
