Berks & Bucks FA - Senior Trophy
Quarter Final
Newport Pagnell Town 2 Ascot United 1
Tuesday, 25 January 2011
Holders Newport made a successful first defence of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy against Hellenic League Ascot Utd.
Ascot Utd started the game playing some nice passing football and had three corners won within the first 5 minutes from persistent pressure.
But it was Vinny Shrieves started the ball rolling for the Swans six minutes in when Newport caught Ascot out on the counter attack. Darren Lynch passing the ball to an advancing Shrieves who placed the ball past the Ascot Keeper.
Ascot pushed forward and tried to find the equaliser but the Newport defence stood strong a cleared the danger.
Luigi Rocco doubling the Newport lead two minutes past the half hour. The ball was crossed form the right, Darren Lynch blasting the ball at close range from the side at the keeper, but Rocco was on hand to place the re-bond into the net.
The Swans almost added a third when the Ascot pulled a great save off from Vinny Shrieves.
Ascot Utd pressed for a goal and came there closest to scoring when the ball was partially cleared for the Ascot forward to hit first time, his fierce shot ricocheting of the Newport cross bar.
The second half was more of a scrappy affair in midfield with a few late tackle going in.
The Swans pressured a tired Ascot Utd and missed some good opportunities to score a third goal.
Ascot did fine a way through on the 64th minute through John Bennett. Bennett received a pass just inside the area, his shot finding the back of the net.
The Swans missed a couple more chances including Darren Lynch missing the chance to score his 100th goal for The Swans. He received a good pass from Spruce; Lynch having too much time to think tried to place the ball in the bottom left but dragged it to wide.
