UCL League Cup
Round 2
Newport Pagnell Town 4 Yaxley 2
Tuesday, 08 February 2011
Last season's beaten finalists Newport moved into the last eight of this season's competition, but not before the Cuckoos gave them a scare or two.
Daren dykes gave the Swans the lead eight minutes in when he scored from a pin ball moment, the ball bouncing off the keeper and defender, dykes there to put the loose ball away.
The Swans came close to adding another three goals but found the Yaxley keeper on form! The first was a brilliant saved from Daren dykes from a shot just inside the area. Then Darren Lynch brought the ball down with his chest and on the turn, his shot was palmed up onto the cross bar by the Yaxley keeper. Then Richard Armstrongs looping shot just floated over the cross bar.
The Cuckoos made the Swans pay for those misses when Mark Boucher pounced on the loose ball from Jack Bridges partial save on 37 minutes.
Parity proved short lived with Darren Lynch restoring the home lead after 40 minutes. Lynchy met the ball from a cross, his looping header giving the Yaxley keeper no chances of reaching the ball.
After some trickery from the Yaxley number 7, he managed to cross the ball for the Yaxley forward to blast over the goal.
The start of the second half Yaxley pushed forward looking for an equaliser but the cross was to strong.
Daniel Nti had a great chance to score but his shot was a little weak and was gathered by the keeper.
Then Darren Lynch shot went wide followed by dykes effort which went over the cross bar.
With a minute of normal time to go the Yaxley piled everyone into the Newport penalty area, including the goal keeper in a last ditch attempt to grab a last minute equaliser and they got one through Sam Bate's on 89 minutes. The Cuckoos thought they had taken the tie into extra time but the Swans had something different in mind.
Jordan Spruce burst into the area, doing one of his little runs and skipped the first tackle but couldn’t skip the second and was brought down for a penalty. The injury time penalty was converted by Daren dykes for Newport to spoil the cuckoo’s ideas.
Then dykes received the ball and took it down the wing. He was told to hold the ball in the corner as there were only second left. dykesy had other ideas and hopped and skipped around three players then slotted the ball under the keeper at close range to complete his hat trick. I wonder what was going through Daren dykes head when he was told to hold the ball up in the corner ‘Sod that I want my Hat trick’? lol.
