UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 3 Daventry United 1
Tuesday, 15 February 2011
Newport made it ten matches without defeat as they avenged a November reverse at Communications Park. Two first half goals put the Swans in charge.
At first the Daventry Defence stood up well to The Swans onslaught. But the Swans were denied from and early chance from Darren Lynch.
It wasn’t until the 27th minute that Richard Armstrong was first on the score sheet when he headed the ball into the net after the ball slipped through the keepers hands.
Then Vinny Shrieves adding a second two minutes later when he received a great pass from the back. His hard low finish beating the keeper, Vinny’s best goal of the season.
The Motormen tried to fight back and their forward found himself in some space but opted to blast the ball which went sailing over the cross bar.
Not many clear cut chances for Daventry as the Newport back line stood well and Captain John Thorpe defended excellently.
On the stroke of Half Time Big Rich almost got his second goal with a diving header but his header came back of the post.
The Second half, The Motormen came out playing some better football and created more chances. The one was brilliantly saved by James Broadbent then not long after that chance the Daventry number 10 shot wide of the mark at close range.
Darren Lynch sealed the win with a 76th minute penalty after Daren dykes was upended in the penalty area. He managed to skip over the first tackle but the second challenge he was brought down just inside the box.
The Swans came close to adding a second when Daren dykes hard shot from the left side hit the post.
Then it was Daventry’s turn to hit the post from a header.
The Motormens pressure did pay off when Daventry’s top scorer Ben Foster scored a Motormen consolation five minutes from time.
Another three points added to the total to keep us up there with the two big guns. Next up Is Northampton Spencer at home then next Tuesday it’s the big one away at the mighty St Neots.
