UCL Premier Division
Rothwell Corinthians 0 Newport Pagnell Town 2
Tuesday, 05 April 2011
Newport completed a double over basement boys Corinths thanks to a goal in each half from the Premier Division's leading scorer Daren dykes Mirroring their Willen Road scoreline.
The Swans took control of the game early on pushing Corinthians back into their own Penalty area. The swans managed to get quite a few crosses in to the Rothwell penalty area including from 4 corners but various chances were missed from these.
The Swans thought they had found a break through when the Rothwell only half cleared a corner for Liam Smyth to hit first time from the edge of the area, the ball took a deflection what looked like off a Rothwell defender which then went into the net. The goal was disallowed as the linesman flagged for offside and claimed the ball had come off a Swans player in an offside position.
dykes then had a golden opportunity to score when he found himself one on one with the keeper but fluffed the shot which made it easy for the keeper to save.
The Swans didn’t have to wait long as dykes put the Swans side on their way to victory after 25 minutes from the penalty spot after he was up ended.
Rothwell were then reduced down to 10 men just before the interval after a corner was whipped into the Corinthians penalty area and the wind took the ball almost into the net. It took a Rothwell defender to stop the ball going into the net via a hand ball to keep the score down to the one goal.
Rothwell tried to counter attack a few times but the danger was cleared and well defended by the Swans.
Rothwell started the second half the better of both teams and came close to scoring on three occasions early on. Dean Buss had to clear his lines and then Thorpe also headed away just in front of the goal line. Warnecki made a good save form close range after the Rothwell striker found himself some space.
Couple more chances fell to the Swans with Lynch shooting just over the cross bar then just afterwards dykes doing the same.
Then Lynchy came close to adding a second when his close ranged hard header was brilliantly saved by the Rothwell keeper.
dykes found the back of the net for the second time in the game when he beat the Rothwell offside to slot the ball under the Keeper.
We thought the Rothwell keeper had a cracking game making some excellent saves including that powerful close range header from Darren Lynch. Very brave. Lol.
