UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 1 - 1 Deeping Rangers
Saturday, 21 February 2009
Deeping's five month occupancy of pole position came to an end although they shared the spoils with their title rivals at Willen Road.
The Swans started really well with Darren Lynch shooting wide. Then a few minutes later Vinny Shrieves broke down the right side to shoot wide.
Deeping put some pressure on but shot over at close range.
Later on in the first half, Danny Nicholls had a shot brilliantly saved by the Deeping keeper. He then managed to scramble and pick up the loose ball.
Later Scott Mulkern was taken out of the game by a very late challenge from a Deeping player. The Ref allowed play to go on due to the advantage. Some say that the Deeping player should not have remained on the pitch and the ref should have called play back to the incident! Yet later, two Swans players were yellow carded for lesser challenges!
Just before half time Jordan Spruce had a long range shot which just sailed over the goal.
Half Time 0-0.
The loss of Scott Mulkern seemed to change Newport Pagnells play. There were fewer balls won and fewer chances created from midfield. This allowed Deeping to get back into the game and more or less control most of the second half.
The Swans had a couple of chances through Darren Lynch producing a good save out of the Deeping keeper. Then just after, Danny Nicholls redirected a cross just over the cross bar with his head.
Then more injury worry was added to the Swans problems when Jordan Spruce was late with a challenge. On his way off the pitch the referee saw it fit to yellow card him.
Deeping thought they had scored, cheers came from their players, but in their amazement Bruce produced one of the best saves I have seen! This was received by a round of applause from both sets of fans including the Deeping keeper!
Several chances were missed by Deeping with the ball glancing across the face of the Newport goal and some headers going over or wide!
A goalless afternoon seemed inevitable until an inspired substitution was made! In the 89th minute, Aidy Mann received the ball from Darren Lynch to turn and place the ball at close range from the left hand side of the goal in the only place the keeper could not reach it!
Deeping responded with an equaliser from Lee Ellison in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Literally from Kick Off the ref blew his whistle for full time.
Full Time 1-1
With the loss of both our play makers this was always going to be a difficult game. Chances went amiss from both sides so a draw was a fair reflection.
Hope both players make a full recovery as soon as possible.
