Wellingborough Town 2004 0 - 5 Newport Pagnell Town
Tuesday, 03 March 2009
After some indifferent home results Newport revived their championship bid with an overwhelming success at the Dog & Duck.
Top scorer Darren Lynch put the Swans on the way to victory on the quarter hour mark after some pressure from the Swans. A long ball was kicked forward by Bruce aided by the wind. Lynch challenged the keeper for the ball, beating him in the air to head past him. He was then able to knock the ball into an open net.
Richard Armstrong added a second three minutes later when he met a brilliant corner, heading past the keeper.
Newport threatened a few more times with Vinny shooting wide, then later Darren Lynch producing a good save from the Doughboys keeper.
The weather was creating problems for the Swans with a few over hit balls skidding across the wet surface aided by the wind.
Wellingborough didn’t threaten much in the first half, with few shots going wide.
Half Time 0-2.
It wasn’t long before Newport added another goal. Scott Mulkern netted Newport's third goal five minutes into the second half when he broke down the right side to place the ball past a watching Wellingborough defence.
Wellingborough started to get back into the game. Bruce having to pull off a great save then a little later Bruce knocking the ball onto the post.
Miss of the season came when Newport counter attacked with three players, Lynch, Vinny and Nichols. The ball found its way through to Nichols, who found himself in front of an empty goal for him to scoop wide. He had too much time to think!
A fourth goal came on the 85th minute when the ball was neatly put down the centre for Kwazi Nkumalo to place past the keeper.
Vinny Shrieves completed the scoring three minutes from time, running down the right side, to place the ball past the keeper to complete the demolition of the Doughboys. A much needed goal for Vinny!
Newport almost added a sixth goal when Darren Lynch slid and beat the keeper to the ball, but the ball rolled wide.
A brilliant result in trick conditions!
This game ended up being the reverse score from two seasons ago when Wellingborough beat the Swans 5-0 at the Dog & Duck.
Full time 0-5
