UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 3 - 1 Raunds Town
Saturday, 14 March 2009
Newport maintained their bid for Premier honours by completing a double over the Shopmates at Willen Road.
Newport Pagnell had four main players missing through injury and suspensions so the team had to be reshuffled, including putting Tappy in centre of defence.
Raunds took a 33rd minute lead through Danny Frid when a cross from the right was not dealt with.
Raunds had another chance to add to their goal but the Shopmates shot over the bar.
The swans got back into the game when top scorer Darren Lynch equalised a minute before half time for the Swans. He was able to get on the end of a cross to knock past the watching keeper.
Half Time 1-1
Raunds applied more pressure when one of their players sliced wide of the Newport goal. Later The Swans had to throw bodies in front of a shot which was defended in the end.
Newport Pagnell missed chances themselves when Vinny had a shot saved.
James Fletcher put the home side in front after 70 minutes when he headed a floating cross past the keepers left side.
Darren Lynch then shot wide and Vinny tried an attempt from outside the area which also looped wide.
The Swans then managed to soak up more pressure from Raunds.
Newport had to wait until four minutes into added time to seal victory through Vinny Shrieves. He received a good pass down the centre from the midfield to place the ball to the keeper’s left to seal the victory and three vital points!
