UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 3 - 1 Wellingborough Town 2004
Saturday, 21st March 2009
Newport completed a league double over the Doughboys as they climbed into the Premier Division top three. Also this is the third time they have beaten the Doughboys when you include the league cup win, the Swans scoring 11 goals in total against their local rivals.
Wellingborough started well showing that they were not going to be the easy push over they were at the Dog & Duck. The first chance came from them when they fired wide. More pressure from them was soaked up by Newport.
Newport had a chance themselves when Darren Lynch headed wide.
The first goal came on the 28th minute and wow what a finish! Rob Macdonald picked the ball up from a clearance which fell to the edge of the Wellingborough area. Rob turned and volleyed to see his shot loop over the watching Doughboy’s keeper!
The Dough Boys attacked once more. There was at times some shaky defending, Bruce slicing the ball when he went to clear it on one occasion.
The Swans doubled their lead on the 36th minute when a great cross was met with a pin point header from Darren Lynch.
Newport put more pressure on Wellingborough but didn’t add to their two goal advantage.
Half Time 2-0
More or less straight from kick off the Doughboys replied through James Daldy scoring on the 46th minute when he wasn’t picked up on the right side.
The Doughboys came close again but fired over at close range.
Newport Pagnell responded when Vinny had a shot saved at close range then again the keeper saved from Darren Lynch in a similar position.
The Dough Boys comeback hopes were extinguished by Lynch's 25th goal of the campaign after 69 minutes. Lynchy received the ball shrugging off a Wellingborough defender for a one on one with the keeper. He waited and waited for the keeper to commit himself. Once he did that he placed the ball past the keeper to regain the Swans two goal advantage.
Both sides had their chances to score afterwards but the score remained at 3-1. Another vital 3 points for the Swans!
Full Time 3-1.
Next up Tuesday 24th March Newport Pagnell Vs St Neots at home.
