UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 2 - 0 St Neots Town
Tuesday, 24 March 2009
The professionals are in town!
The newly managed St Neots team were in Town with two professionals in charge, Michael Hughes and Steve Lomas. But it was Newport Pagnell that was going to spoil their day. Newport's bid for the Premier crown gathered momentum with this win which lifted them to second place in the table.
Steve Dogbe's sixth minute own goal from Drew Mitten's left wing centre handed the Swans the lead. Drew attempted to cross the ball for the number 5 to slice into his own net.
Then later Vinny Shrieves beat the keeper to the ball to knock it over him but there was a waiting defender to clear the ball of the line denying Newport a chance to double their advantage.
Then Danny Nichols shot over at close range.
St Neots had 3 or 4 shots sail either wide or over from long range but didn’t really threaten all that much in the first half.
Then Darren Lynch’s header went wide just before the interval.
Half Time 1-0.
St Neots improved in the second half with one time Northern Ireland international Michael Hughes prompting from midfield after going on as an interval substitute. The closest the visitors came to an equaliser saw Darren Gourlay's free kick saved well by James Howarth.
Newport Pagnell then had to clear off the line themselves to deny St Neots the equaliser they were looking for.
The Swans had to sustain plenty of pressure from St Neots and were boxed in for long periods in their own half. Again St Neots came close, missing a couple of sitters right in front of goal!
The Swans managed to have a couple of attacks, Darren Lynch heading wide and Vinny Shrieves heading over.
Newport had to wait until two minutes from the end to wrap up victory through Danny Nicholls who lobbed the keeper after collecting a miss kicked ball by the St Neots keeper.
Richard Armstrong had to be taken off injured. Hope he makes a full recovery for the game at Daventry Town.
Full Time 2-0
