UCL Premier Division
Daventry Town 0 - 1 Newport Pagnell Town
Saturday, 28 March 2009
Newport completed a double at Communications Park to boost their own title chances and inflict a blow on Daventry's hopes of a second successive promotion.
The first half was a fairly even affair with Daventry having a couple of chances which Bruce dealt with.
Darren Lynch had a chance to put the Swans one up when he headed at close range but the keeper made a comfortable save. Lynchy was ruled off side anyway.
Daventry had a chance towards the end of the first half when their forward received the ball just inside the area. He turned to shoot but the ball was blocked by a Newport defender.
Scott Mulkern had a good shot from outside the area which just went wide.
Half Time 0-0
Second half Newport came out playing some better football. Danny Nicholls continued to play well and also fill the space left by the injured Richard Armstrong.
John Thorpe came forward from defence to score the crucial goal after 55 minutes. Scott Mulkern whipped in a cross from a corner for Thorpey to head past the keeper to put the Swans in the driving seat.
Darren Lynch had a close range lob brilliantly saved by the keeper.
Kwazi came on to give some pace up front for Newport Pagnell. He did a great job winning some balls and supporting the front two.
Daventry came close to making things level towards the end of the game but Newport cleared from the line. Also some shots from the opposition going over.
Full Time 0-1
We thought Drew Mitten did a good job at left back but the player that stood out had to be Danny Nichols, constantly working creating a lot from midfield.
A crucial win for the Swans against their title rivals. We just need SL Corby to slip up now.
This win meant a lot to the lads. All we could hear when walking past the changing rooms was shouting and cheering from the lads (mainly from Vinny). Well done lads and well deserved!
