UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 1 - 1 Desborough Town
Tuesday, 31 March 2009
Newport dropped their first point in eight matches but this draw was enough to see them take over pole position in the Premier Division for the first time this season.
Darren Lynch gave the Swans the lead eleven minutes in with his 26th goal of the season. A free kick was won six yards outside the penalty area. Darren Lynch headed the resulting cross to put the Swans one up.
Desborough gave Newport a couple of scares from a couple of crosses.
Darren Lynch had a header go wide, then not long before half time Desborough had to scramble the ball away.
Darren Lynch got yellow carded for a late challenge to the annoyance of the players and fans. But it wasn’t the booking that annoyed us all, it was the fact that a Desborough player committed a foul which was just as bad and didn’t receive a booking!
Richard Armstrong had to go off injured as he hasn’t fully recovered from his previous injury.
Desborough finished the first half the stronger team attacking and with more possession.
Half Time 1-0
Desborough started where they had left off putting Newport under some pressure. This paid off for them when Mick Tolton wasn’t picked up just inside the area. His 61st minute goal drew things level for Desborough.
Newport almost put themselves back in front when the keeper and the defence managed to scramble the ball away again before any of the Swans players could pounce on it.
Scottie fired over at close range when the ball bounced out to him. Then Danny Nichols also fired over.
Newport Pagnell had to clear the danger right in front of goal. At times Desborough pushed Newport Pagnell back during the second half.
The Swans did win a penalty in the final minute when the ball was handled by a Desborough defender. Fletch stepped up to take it, but unfortunately it was comfortably saved by the Desborough keeper.
Full Time 1-1
Newport Pagnell missed Richard Armstrong’s presence in midfield which changed the game somewhat.
Newport: James Howarth, Rob Tapp, Drew Mitten, John Thorpe, James Fletcher, Danny Nicholls, Scott Mulkern, Richard Armstrong (Alex Phillips), Vinny Shrieves (Kwazi Nkumalo), Darren Lynch, Rob Macdonald (Matt Broomes).
