UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 3 - 2 Long Buckby
Tuesday, 07 April 2009
A dramatic finale at Willen Road saw title chasing Newport Pagnell pick up three points in their quest for a first Premier title.
Newport Pagnell started as the better team but there was an incident that changed the game slightly in the first half. Scottie was challenged late after the ball had gone and the referee carried on play. While Newport were upset and still complaining, Long Buckby managed to win a free kick, the ball was crossed, cleared but then put back into the area for Chris Davies to volley into the net with 14 minutes gone on the clock. The referee said it was a 50/50 for the ball but the ball had long gone when the foul was committed.
The Swans did win a free kick on the edge of the area, but the ball was blasted at the wall by Drew Mitten.
The Swans did not give up pushing forward. They equalised ten minutes before the break through, Vinny Shrieves, heading the ball onto the underneath of the cross bar and in to the net from a Scott Mulkern cross.
James had to make a good save from a close range shot just before half time.
Danny Nichols also firing wide.
Half Time 1-1
Long Buckby started well making Newport Pagnell defend and at times pushing the Swans back.
The Swans replied well by attacking and winning another free kick just outside the penalty area. The resulting shot going over the bar.
Long Buckby escaped a goal mouth scramble and eventually cleared the ball.
But Courtney Herbert put the visitors back in the lead after seventy minutes when he was not picked up on the far post.
As the minutes ticked away it seemed as though vital points would elude Newport and the visitors would claim all 3 points but the Swans were never going to give up that easily.
With 87 minutes played Shrieves struck again to haul Newport on level terms, turning to fire home off the post! Then an inspired substitution was made 5 minutes before Vinny’s goal was mad. Youngster Lewis Wilson marked his first team debut with the Swans scoring a decider in the final minute, netting from close range to prompt euphoric scenes. What a great entrance by Lewis!
A hard game without the two main men, Richard Armstrong and Darren Lynch but the lads did well and didn’t give up!
Newport: James Howarth, Alex Phillips, Drew Mitten, John Thorpe, James Fletcher (Lewis Wilson), Danny Nicholls, Scott Mulkern, Rob Tapp (Aidy Mann), Vinny Shrieves, Matt Broomes (Kwazi Nkumalo), Rob Macdonald.
