Division 1
Woburn Whirlwinds 2 v 1 NPTFC Lions
The final game of the season played on a lovely Wednesday evening and played at the ground where we had our final game of last season which resulted in some silverware. Sadly on this occasion only league placings were at stake as the Lions looked to drag themselves from the foot of the Division 1 table.
The Whirlwinds are still challenging for the title and have a date at Stadium MK next week in the league cup final so they are a fair side and were not to be taken lightly.
The formation was changed to match the 3 man midfield that WW employ to some success. The first half showed that this worked as we won the half 1-0 with Mickey scoring a great goal which clearly meant a lot to him and to his team mates.
Half time 0-1
The second half was decided by two unfortunate passages of play which again show how cruel the game can be and always seems to happen when the top teams play the bottom teams.
With only 15 minutes to go a speculative shot was missed by the Lions defence and goal keeper as the ball painfully landed in the back of the net for the equalizer.
The winning goal came in more controversial circumstance as the Whirlwinds attacked down our right the winger let the ball go out of play by at least a yard, he paused as did the Lions players expecting a throw to be awarded but the referee waved play on which caught everybody by surprise but not the WW striker who was provided with a cross which he duly converted for the winner.
Two lessons to be learned from this unfortunate incident, one for the players which is the old "play to the whistle" line and one for the Manager who stood alone on that side of the pitch appealing for a throw in with nobody else to back him up! Note to self "Must employ linesman next season"
The game ended and so did our hopes of avoiding a bottom placed finish which is a great shame but if you don't get the points then you don't get the rewards.
Every player deserved man of the match today but Jack just edged it with a gritty and determined performance.
So the season is now over and we face a summer of player recruitment and hard work on fitness, discipline, new team formations and overall team play which I hope will make us a stronger unit both on and off the pitch.
Thanks to all the parents and families for their support and effort in the last 9 months it has been appreciated but bigger thanks to the lads for trying harder than anybody could have asked of them when the world must have felt against them they continued to show spirit and excuse the pun "Lion Hearts" at every match they have played in.
Over and out, have a good summer.
