A much better all round performance on Wednesday evening as the Lions step up to the challenge against a triky customer in Scot Yth.
The Lions enjoyed good spells of possession, and were dominant throughout the first half, we managed to deal with the obvious physical threat that Scots bring, they had both pace and size, but we matched that with a better quality of football and the chances soon came.
A well-delivered corner from Mitch, saw Boothy tuck the ball away at the near post to get us in the lead. We had to be mindful of the pace down that Scot’s had down the right wing, but Sagey had the match of that pace and by and large contained well, plus got us going our way when the Scots attack broke down.
Westy back on after a brief spell on the sidelines with a toe injury got straight into action in his combative style and worked really hard, with great determination to grab us the second.
The first half drew to a close and we had played well we showed a better a attitude right from the off, and this undoubtedly was making the difference, we were in Match with a stronger Scot’s team and we showed we could up it when we had to.
The second half kicked off and we were under pressure with Scot’s determined to get something out of this coming, they were after all breathing down our necks in the division and had everything to play for.
10 minutes into the second half saw Westy with another good piece of determination after a good ball from Mitch, put the ball into the net to make it 3-0 to the home side. The Lions now very much in the box seat just had to keep our concentration with plenty of time on the clock against a still dangerous opponent in Scot’s.
The team shuffled around, Liam cam back on as Boothy had to go out due to a knee problem. Scot’s upped the pace and the long ball threat from both centre back and keeper eventually broke through when we didn’t seem to deal wit the first ball in the middle of the park, and it fell to one of their players who dispatched it into the net to take it to 3-1. We responded within minutes with Liam grabbing his first after showing a good turn of speed and strength, Liam looked more mobile after coming back on and this definitely helped him with his two goals.
We then had a wobbly moment when we seemed to lose our concentration for a short period, and at this point Scot’s seized the initiative for the first time in the game sensing we could be got at, and grabbed two quick goals, we again responded with another excellent counter attack of our own, with Matty putting Liam in from the rightt, he beat the last man and with the advancing keeper struck the ball superbly first time as is sailed into the net to take the game to 5-3, surely this was it, but no, it was a mad end to end finish to the game and with Scot’s still with their tails up pressed us again and with a thunderous strike from the centre back it hit Marcus and ricocheted up into the net to take it to 5-4.
Late, late into the second half we had a free kick in the far corner, Matty stepped up delivered a great ball under the crossbar to advancing Alex, who slammed home the eventual winner, and with seconds to go that was the end of a good match that had a bit of everything.
Bad luck Scot’s who had come to town and gave it a go, we go back to theirs next Wednesday for part 2. All in all this was a much better performance from the Lions who had played well physically and mentally and that made the difference tonight. We looked sharper and more motivated that we have been of late. We just need to keep our heads and concentration throughout the game and guard against any panic when teams will have their spell in the game; we just have to absorb that when it comes.
Well done tonight lads, next up City Colts on Sunday.
Have a good week
