The matches are coming thick and fast as we head towards the business end of the season. City Colts were our opponents today, we got underway and again the Lions looked to try and dominate proceedings right from the off, barely had a minute gone by when Matty popped up at the far post to head home the first goal. We went on to play some nice football and City Colts made virtually no impact on the game through this period. Although we played out the half with most of the possession it took some time before our second goal arrived, a well struck ball from Alex.
The game was well under control from the Lions point of view, although we expected Colts with nothing to lose now to step up in the second. The Lions seemed to be playing well within themselves, and the third goal came from some good build up play that saw Sagey taking the ball down the left wing beat the full back and put in a nice cross to the back post where Westy had made up a lot of ground to finish well and grab us our third.
We then had a period where we still had all the ball but allowed Colts to get a foothold in the game mostly by giving the ball away in the midfield area, a foul outside the box saw Colts step up with an inch perfect free kick the slipped just under the bar to get the home team a goal, and of course there tails were up. As the second half moved on Colts strung together a nice pass and move phase that we didn’t challenge robustly enough, and Colts had a second goal.
This felt a little uncomfortable; as the Lions had gone from totally dominating the game and now the home side were breathing down our necks. At this point the Lions did up the game and we made definite in roads into the Colts box, with one or two chance either going wide or over the top. One though fell to Liam who dispatched the ball into the net to give us the two goal cushion.
The Lions were now firmly in the driving seat and played some excellent football as the game drew to a close a nice one-two saw Tom receive the ball on his left and drilled it past the keeper to get his first goal for the Lions, and the goal that sealed the game.
In truth this was a game where the Lions played well and stepped up a gear when we needed to especially towards the end. Well played Colts who had a couple of players carrying injuries today and good luck for the rest of their season. Our next match is on Wednesday night, away to Scot Yth, and we can expect a tough game, we played well in our first match last week, and so we can expect Scots to be well prepared this time.
Well done again to the Lions today.
Have a good week.
