Newport Pagnell Town Tigers 1 – 2 Two Mile Ash
This was it, last game the season in a top of the table clash between the Tigers and Two Mile Ash, the winner of this game would be crowned champions of league 7 and the losers settling for second but still promotion.
The game of the season kicked off on a freshly cut surface with each sides of the pitch full of support for both teams with the predicted rain holding off. The away team kicked off and took the game to Newport who were on the back foot for first 10-15 minutes but our defence held firm with James Knight in particular not letting there talented No.10 get a sniff of goal.
It was then the Tigers turn to start putting a marker down on the game as the ever influential Bassy started to boss the midfield with both Alex Tite and Connor going close to opening the scoring in an exciting first 30 minutes.
Halftime whistle went, the game evenly poised but knowing that the Tigers have to win meant the next half was a now or never affair.
HT 0-0
The second half began with Newport playing down hill, the scene of many a comeback this season.
They came out of the blocks the quickest and went towards the Two Mile Ash goal with real intent but could not find a way past a very solid defence with their big number 4 looking up for the battle. Our persistence finally paid off when Olivia’s fantastic through ball found Mathew in the area for him to turn his defender and touch the ball over the rushing goalkeeping, 1-0 Tigers and we were closer than ever to securing the title.
Two Mile Ash were then caught under more pressure as Bassy’s long range shot smacked the crossbar as we chased another goal to kill the game. We were looking comfortable but the tension became more and more unbearable and this seemed to of effect the Tigers as we conceded a sloppy goal when we failed to get rid of the ball as their No.10 rifled the ball home close to the goal to hand the advantage back to Two Mile Ash 1-1
The last 10 minutes saw us throw everything at them but to no avail as Matthew and Vincent worked tirelessly up front to work an opening but there was no way through as our legs tired and in the last minute it heartbreak for the Tigers, as Two Mile Ash break away from a Newport attack sensing we were attacking in numbers and barley anyone defending, got forward and scored past the brave Ewan to finish the game off and hopes of a league title for Newport Pagnell Town Tigers. 2-1 Two Mile Ash
Two Mile Ash celebrated and we sank to our knees but it has been a great season and we were so very close to a famous victory but in the end it was not meant to be. I have to thank the players for their first class attitude all season and it has been a pleasure managing them throughout. Second place and promotion is a fantastic achievement and they should all be proud of themselves. Well done Tigers.
Over and out and here’s to next season!
