A near post header from Liam helped to seal the victory and the vital 3 points for the Lions last night!
It’s going to be a busy week as the Lions took on the resurgent MK Wanderers, who had played well over recent games. The Lions needed to be on their toes right from the off. However we didn’t look as sharp as we should have at this stage of the season with so much at stake, our passing wasn’t quite as sharp, and we looked a little hesitant at times.
Of course MKW had much to say about that and they pressed the ball well and picked up loose balls that didn’t quite get to the man first time. We played with the wind the first half but couldn’t seem to make that an advantage for us, and to be frank we hardly troubled the keeper, save for one close effort that should have gone in midway through the half.
MKW looked lively on the break, and defensively we got turned a couple of times, Marcus did well and held on to anything coming his way, some MKW wayward shooting also helped us at times, as the first half drew to a close it was a game of nip and tuck and could go either way.
HT 0-0
We got under way on the whistle, this time against the wind, we looked more lively this half, and we needed to be, not a time for people to go missing, we knew these final games would be tight and tough and that’s how it was proving to be.
The midfield had a bit more bite about it, with people starting to concentrate on their jobs and not all over the place, we pressed the ball more, and started to pull some attacks together, we forced a corner midway through the half, well delivered to the near post by Mitch and Liam got to it first and headed home to grab us the lead, it was a well executed goal, and now we had to concentrate and keep fighting for every ball, some ferocious tackling from Jack Croxford saw the sort of spirit we should all have displayed from the off. We again pressed the Wanderers goal, and again forced another corner, could we replicate the same scenario, Mitch again delivered and as the ball went in at pace at a low angle the MKW defender could only get a glance with his head that then went into his net, unfortunate for the lad, a but a big plus for us, but with still 10 minutes of the match left we needed to be on guard, control the rest of the game and see it out, I wouldn’t say we controlled the rest of the game but we did see it out without conceding.
The match had literally been a game of two half’s, the first half we just didn’t look sharp enough, and mentally not tuned into the game, we got our act together in the second and played as we know we can and some really nice and tidy football came through.
So with two games left the Lions must make sure they turn up physically and mentally for every minute. We have Willen and MK Wanderers left this week.
Well done again lads you will take the 3 points over the performance sometimes, but you could make life a lot easier for yourselves if we are pumped up and ready to go from minute one.
Well played,
Lets all make sure we all get behind the boys over the next 2 games!
See you later this week.
