AFC Hayes 1 – Newport Pagnell 3
A young AFC Hayes side started the brighter of the 2 teams, showing lots of pace and energy (not much liked by Tins and Riles….opposition with pace is not a good thing!!!) but the nice passing in the middle of the park was not replicated with the final ball. After the 1st 10 minutes of the game the Newport team started to play there own game and looked to be a threat creating a couple of good chances and some speculative shots from distance. A fired up Vincent Shrieves (after tangling with the Hayes centre back) opened the scoring, a belter of a free kick driven low and hard from about 25 yards flew in to the bottom right hand corner of the net!!! Newport started to dominate with lots of energy and hard work across the pitch; this led to the 2nd goal but wait….. Disallowed, a cut back from Vin to the unmarked Mario for an easy nod in has been given off side (yes off side from a cut back I here you ask….shocking lines man!!!!). But this only led to a 2nd for Vinny 2 minutes later, a strong run from Spruce and a nice though ball to Mario led to a shot off the post which flicked up for an easy nod in for the Vin Dog, Newport 2-0 up!!! The second half started with 1 way traffic, Newport absolutely playing Hayes off the park, Gavin England becoming an extra spectator (to add to the strong 4 capacity crowd!!!), it was not long in to the 2nd half when Vincent Shrieves scored the perfect Hat Trick (right foot, left foot, header!!!!), he rolled his defended and drilled a left foot shot low in to the bottom corner. Newport continued with confidence and with about 15 mins to go the Vin left to a standing ovation (I think my old man applauded him as he left the pitch!!!). The last 10 minutes saw Newport let themselves down, after all the hard work put in, the Newport team started to fade and with only 5 minutes to go a super finish by the Hayes centre midfielder sailed in to the top corner (Gav…. No chance!!!). A strong performance by the Newport team, only fitness and concentration let them down in the final 10 minutes but based on the play in the 1st 80 minutes, promising things look to come from this re-energised Newport team!!!!!!
