UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 2 - 3 Raunds Town
Monday, 28 December 2009
Raunds are now just a point behind Rothwell Corinthians in their bid to escape the drop zone after producing the Bank Holiday Monday upset of the day.
Some good pressure from The Swans paid off when Jordan Spruce was tripped in the Raunds penalty area after a good run by Spruce himself. Darren Lynch penalty was initially saved by the keeper but Lynch pounced on the re-bound to give Newport a 23rd minute advantage.
New Raunds recruit Dave Townsend scored a debut leveller four minutes later when he shot from the side. The ball appeared to come off the stand in keeper into the net.
And then on the half hour top scorer Karl Bates gave the Shopmates the lead when he broke through the middle to place the ball past the Newport keeper into the net.
The Swans won a free kick just outside the corner of the penalty area, Jordan Spruces hard shot was tipped over the Raunds Cross Bar.
Just after the interval Darren Lynch came close to levelling things when his header was well saved by the Raunds keeper.
Lynch's 18th goal of the season, a 50th minute spot kick, restored parity. This was after he was tripped in the area. The loose ball was blasted into the goal but the referees whistle had been blown for the penalty. No advantage was to be played for some reason, but luckily Darren Lynch converted the penalty.
Various chances went a miss from the Swans. Darren Lynch had a header saved on the goal line by the keeper then Richard Armstrong’s shot was also blocked.
The later Vinnie had to shots in succession saved, the first from a scissor kick, the second he pounced on the re-bound for the keeper to some how block with his body. This was going to be the Keepers day and not Newport’s!
A last minute Cavell Jarvis decider gave Raunds only their third away win of the campaign and to give the Swans their third defeat in a row.
