League Cup, Quarter Final
Long Buckby 1 - 3 Newport Pagnell Town
Saturday, 23 January 2010
The Swans enjoyed a second extra time cup success on the road in the space of five days with this Station Road victory after Tuesday night saw them through to the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy Semi Finals.
Newport Pagnell started the first half in control and at time penned Long Buckby back for periods. Several chances went a miss in the first half, Darren Lynch had a hat trick of headers go over the cross bar.
Bill Cosby (Jordan) had a chance well saved when he ran into the area, his placed shot comfortably saved.
Buckby had a chance really well saved, Bruce have to dive back a tad to push the ball past the post.
Buckby went in front a minute past the hour through Josh Urquhart which made us think it was going to be a day of misses and a loss by the odd goal! Im glad I was wrong and gave myself a slap fore being so negative!
The Swans made sure that they were not going to give in when the newly introduced sub Rob McDonald broke down the right side. His low cross was met by the charging Matt Broomes who put Newport on terms with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Bruce dealt with some pressure from Long Buckby towards the end of the first half and the Swans again had another chance to take the lead go a miss. 1-1 it’s stayed and extra time for the second time in 5 days it was to be!
Scott Mulkern put the Swans ahead in the first minute of extra time when he picked up the ball from a half clearance. His vicious shot from 20 yards out powered past the opened mouthed keeper. We all thought it was going wide until the back of the net shock! Goal of the season I think!
Newport Pagnell place last four was sealed by Daren dykes after 101 minutes when he broke into the right side of the penalty area; he slotted the ball around the keeper to give the Swans a two goal advantage.
Long Buckby tested Bruce who tipped the ball wide from a low shot to keep Newport the two goals the better.
Then towards the end Long Buckby had to clear the ball of the line to prevent any more damage.
Im sure we all agreed in the stand that man of the match had to be Matt Broomes. He controlled that left side really well and his delivery to the midfield and front two was very good. And of coarse his goal to level things was a great finish.
