League Division 3
Silverstone Racers Blues 2 v 5 NPTFC Lions
Lucky Seven
It was a beautiful setting for todays fixture. Sprawling homes in the town, the sound of engines on the nearby circuit and a mature gent carefully rolling the cricket crease, it almost felt like the football season should be over and more genteel pastimes should be enjoyed instead.
Yeah right! The season is no means over yet with this to be our 7th game in the league against a good side who have had mixed results of late.
The starting line up was tweaked a little as Connor started up top with David leaving Rhys on the bench muttering that it was his Mum's fault that he didn't make training on Monday.
The opening exchanges were frantic with both teams tentatively prodding at each other like a couple of tired boxers. Our passing hadn't clicked into place and through balls weren't finding our strikers which was resulting in early frustration.
David had clearly had enough of this activity so when he received a ball wide left he powered past a couple of players advancing into the box drawing the keeper from his line which just left enough space to slot into the net. Not for the first time this season his pace and close control caused havoc, strange for a lad with such attacking instincts to ask to play at the back soon!
Only moments later the decision to start Connor was rewarded as a ball from Mickey found him with his back to goal. Most people expected him to lay off a pass but amazingly and I'm not quite sure how but with his left foot he hooked the ball over his head and everybody else's resulting in the ball nestling in the net. Class from "Cool Hand".
The game was looking like it could be over as a contest as David grabbed his 15th of the season with a carbon copy of a goal we scored last week. David took a strike which was diverted up onto the bar by Connor as he followed up. The ball bounced back to David who easily headed it into the net.
The home side stirred at this point and they caused us some issues as concentration started to lapse. A Blues player, not a short one at that created some space on the edge of our box and the smallest player in our squad, Seb, was adjudged to have fouled this player as he cut across him which looked like a fair challenge as it was never going to be shoulder to shoulder with the height difference. Anyhoo the ref awarded the free kick and all credit to the full back who lifted the ball over our wall and into the only place in the goal that Kiron couldn't reach to bring the scoreline at half time a little closer.
Half time 1-3
The lads seem to like being challenged to go on and keep clean sheets or score more goals during half time team talks but in this instance the request was to concentrate and keep things tight as the home side were bound to come at us from the off.
With this chat ringing in their ears the keeping it tight thing turned into 2 very quick goals instead. First Basi beat the whole left flank of Blues players before a great pass found the onrushing skipper who whacked in his 10th of the season.
Now he had left the frustrating place on the bench Gurveer the hat trick specialist got in on the action as Seb found him in the box. Gurveer twisted and turned again making the keeper rush at him and he just passed the ball into the empty net to make the MAD's and the Manager breath a sigh of relief.
Many teams would have folded at this stage but not the Blues as their Manager geed them up for one last push and push they did as the lively left winger went past Jack who could only lift him off his feet for a penalty.
A few of the players had suggested that the match ball being used was a little flat and from where I was stood it did have an odd sound to it when struck but nonetheless the man in charge was happy with it. With this interesting fact deployed it became apparent now as the same full back who scored in the first half lifted the ball again but this time it sailed into the farmers field.
Both teams were creating chances as the game flew from end to end and we rode our luck at times as goal bound shots were blocked in our box from Alex, Lewis and the face of Kiron on one occasion as we tried to keep the scoreline down to one.
The home keepers magnetism stopped us from scoring more goals as Rhys tested him on more than one occasion but with every save he made his long punts down field were being headed back by man of the match Lewis, who we joke would head a brick but I genuinely think that if 3 points was at stake he would literally head one of Ibstock's finest creations!
The final goal of the game came from the Blues which was scant consolation for their efforts as they did put us to the test in the second half which is no bad thing as we face them again in 3 weeks time at home so we now know what to expect.
7 wins out of 7 now in the league which is a great picture to paint but there is still some way to go before we can start to chill the non alcoholic fizzy stuff as there are sure to be some final twists in this prolonged season.
Team: Kiron Das, Lewis Brewer, Jack Gardner, Alex King, Hamish Bull (c) Basi Combes, Mickey Siegieda, David Shannon, Connor Ryan, Gurveer Barang, Rhys Clark, Seb Carter
