The Under 18's today became the second Berks and Bucks Cup winners of the season with a 2-1 victory over Beaconsfield SYCOB. In a really tense, high quality game all of the lads put in 100% effort and just managed to hang on in the frantic final minutes as Beaconsfield threatened an equaliser.
The young Swans started at a really good pace and about 15 minutes in, you would have thought it was going to be a relatively comfortable afternoon in the spring sunshine. This early dominance was rewarded when on 20 minutes a poor kick from the opposition keeper wasn’t controlled by their full back, and Dan Nti pounced to slot the ball home. This really should have galvanised the lads but it had the opposite effect and it was Beaconsfield who started to dominate.
A cross from the right beat a diving Jack Bridges but was cleared for by Christian Smail. The resulting corner fell at the feet of the opposition forward whose shot was superbly saved by Jack, the rebound again fell to Beaconsfield and this time the shot was cleared of the line. If the lads hadn’t realised they were in a game they certainly did now.
The second half was a very equally contested affair with both teams having chances to score. It was Newport however who stretched their lead when in the 59th minute Mark Baron coolly lobbed the keeper to make it 2-0. This really should have been enough to see us home but sloppy defending from a free kick allowed Beaconsfield to pull it back to 2-1.
The last 10 minutes were the longest in history (certainly for manager Perry) as Beaconsfield pressed and pressed for an equaliser. The Newport defence held firm though and in the end most probably just about deserved their victory.
They have now won the trophy twice in four years and it is something that everybody at the club should be very proud of. The Berks and Bucks Cup is a very tough competition to win and this goes to show that the quality of players coming through at the club is still very high level.
