League Cup Final @ Cogenhoe FC.
Newport Pagnell Town 1 St Ives Town 2
Tuesday, 20 April 2010
St Ives carried off the Knockout Cup for the first time with an extra time defeat of fellow first time finalists Newport Pagnell.
Darren Lynch had the ball in the net for the Swans nine minutes in but an offside flag cut short Newport celebrations.
The first St Ives chance fell to Jamie Blackwell but he failed to get any direction on a header from a Dan Moyes cross.
Matt Broomes fed Lynch to send a fierce shot over the bar, and the powerful Swans striker then tested Rob Mackney with a snap shot.
Defences had largely dominated the opening half but the game opened up after the interval.
Richard Armstrong was just over from 20 yards early in the second half but it was St Ives who made the breakthrough after 62 minutes. Newport failed to deal with a ball in from the right and Jamie Blackwell steered the ball through a crowd of players from twelve yards.
Dean Buss had the ball in the net for Newport only for the score to be ruled out for a push.
Lynch was presented with a rare clear opening nine minutes from time but lobbed the ball straight into Mackney's hands, while at the other end Ozie Foster's free kick found James Howarth well placed to save.
Moyes missed a chance to wrap up the win for St Ives, blazing over from a pass from substitute Conor Washington, and with five minutes remaining Newport levelled. The Saints failed to clear a left wing corner and Swans substitute Michael Lyon gleefully hooked the ball home.
Extra time saw St Ives regain the lead after 93 minutes. Matt Bannister's through ball released Washington on the right and he cut in to steer the ball past the advancing Howarth.
Lynch put a far post header wide from an Armstrong cross before Blackwell was narrowly wide for St Ives with a 20 yard strike.
Late pressure saw Armstrong head wide from a Newport corner before the angle of post and bar denied Lynch a leveller.
Newport: James Howarth, Scott Mulkern, Keith Williams (Liam Smyth), John Thorpe, Dean Buss, Rob Tapp, Matt Broomes (Michael Lyon), Richard Armstrong, Vinny Shrieves (Daren dykes), Darren Lynch, Rob Macdonald.
St Ives: Rob Mackney, Jason King, Tim Quy, Dan Newman, Will Fordham, Ricky Dear, Dan Moyes, Matt Bannister, Jamie Blackwell, Ozie Foster, Declan Rogers (Conor Washington).
