League Division 3
NPTFC Lions 3 v 1 Silverstone Racers
CHAMPIONS ;D
The club trophy cabinet will need to be cracked open again as the 9th straight league win resulted in the Lions adding their contribution to the achievements of other club teams in a successful season so far!
The results and tables on the league website have not been updated in a few weeks so a little spy was sent to watch our closest league rivals cancel each other out in a 3-3 draw last weekend leaving us with only 1 win required to take the title.
The non alcoholic champers was on ice, well strictly speaking it was in the kit bag but with the weather turning wet and cold it was as close to an ice bucket as we could afford!
Silverstone proved to be a good side when the reverse fixture was played a few weeks ago and with hope of grabbing the runners up spot they were going to be up for this today.
The away side lived up to their name as they raced into an early lead shocking the shivering home crowd. The goal was a stunner as a fierce volley from the edge of the box left Kiron planted and the nerves looking a bit frayed.
Not to worry as only a minute later we attacked and "Tenacious D" David (Sorry U12's match reporters the nick name bug is infectious!) turned smartly in the area before slotting in the equalizer. Normally an equalizing goal in such an important match would have resulted in crazed celebrations but everybody seemed frozen still!
The goal to take off the pressure was a fine creation as Man of the Match Alex won a strong challenge in the middle of the pitch, he came away with the ball before sweeping a cracking pass into Connors feet wide left. Connor turned the right back inside out before driving a low cross into the area which was met by the new blood red boots worn by Gurveer who diverted the ball into the net. Cue more mild celebrations under the brollies.
We continued to attack and strikes from Mickey, Basi, Rhys and Connor were all collected by the talented Racers keeper.
Half time 2-1
The half time challenge was simple today, "keep doing what you are doing now and do in the second half what you have done all season to do your best for each other to do yourselves proud" See, simples!
The pressure was relieved in no more than 1 second half minute as Jack set Rhys scampering off down the right flank. It looked like he had overrun the ball and with everybody expecting a cross as he hit the goal line Rhys had other ideas and from the most acute angle he slid the ball into the far corner.
Kiron was only in action twice in the second half as Alex and Lewis looked strong together at the back preserving our lead.
We created a hatful of chances as Skipper Bull created havoc time and time again down the left flank, such a shame he has opted to chase eggs on a Sunday morning next season as he has flourished into a fine player and inspirational captain
The final whistle brought relief and celebrations and on a warmer day the Lions manager may have worn a beige suit and hopped and skipped across the turf in a "Pleatesque" celebration but the weather wasn't kind enough for this sort of caper!
The champers was cracked open and sprayed with gusto as we enjoyed the moment that every team strives for when the first ball is kicked in September.
After the disappointment of being relegated by two divisions the lads have shown what they can do with an excellent attitude, some stunning football and smiles on their faces resulting in just deserts for their efforts.
The final challenge is to finish the league season undefeated with 3 games to go but if this isn't possible then to win the title in the final season of nursery football is rich reward in itself.
Well done lads, we are all very proud of you
