Newport keep clean sheet in mud bath!
With rain lashing down on an already squelching Leagrave Common, it was a surprise to your correspondent that this game went ahead at all.
After a few minutes the middle of the pitch was turning into a mud bath and it was clearly going to be a day for getting the basics right, taking no chances and trying to get the ball wide as much as possible.
Newport were able to do this for most of the first half, only occasionally trying to overplay. Matty and Crox were putting in a lot of work in the middle of midfield and kept Newport on the front foot throughout the first period.
Kevin and Tom saw quite a bit of the ball up front but with the surface becoming increasingly slippery, they were never quite able to get their shots away and, apart from one shot that rattled the cross bar, the home team's keeper was relatively untroubled considering how much Newport were dominating possession and territory.
Half-time: Sundon Athletic 0 – 0 Newport
The rain eased in the second half but by now the mud bath had turned into a river.
Newport were looking pretty solid at the back which allowed the full backs to join in as the visitors continued to push forward.
Brandon had come on up front and was unlucky not to score when he knocked the ball past the keeper only to see it stick agonisingly in the mud, allowing the Sundon defence to clear.
The breakthrough came soon afterwards though as Blakey finished off a fine sweeping move. Westie knocked the ball up to Blakey, who took a good touch and rolled the ball into Mitchell's path. Mitch and Brandon combined well before cutting the ball back to the edge of the box for Tom to lash home right footed giving the keeper no chance.
Newport were well on top now and the second goal came when Crox's shot from the edge of the box slipped through the keepers hands.
For a few minutes things threatened to turn nasty as one or two of the home side temporarily lost their discipline. The ref stayed calm though and just about managed to keep a lid on things.
Newport continued to dominate as they had done throughout. They had played some reasonable football in terrible conditions and thoroughly deserved the victory.
Come on Newport!
