Chiltern League Div 1 – Under 16s
Match Report: 20th March 2011:
Sundon Park Rangers 2 v 0 Newport Pagnell Town
Half-time: 1 – 0
Newport Squad: Jack Allen, Brandon Banda, Tom Blake, Steve Blood, Alex Collard, Jack Croxford, Matty Cullis, Eben Darko, Kevin Feldman, Johnny Harman, Luke Parker, Liam Scott, Dan Shaw, Mitchell Tofts, Jack Westbrook.
Newport bite the dust
What a difference three weeks make! Last time they visited Leagrave Common, Newport picked up a deserved victory on a mud bath of a pitch, but today everything was different.
The mud bath had been replaced by a hard-crusted dust bowl and the team that had fought hard for their victory against Sundon Athletic had morphed into one that with a few exceptions looked like they thought that turning up would be enough.
It wasn't to be as Sundon Park Rangers wanted it more (at least early on), adapted better to the conditions, and took their chances to secure a deserved win.
The early exchanges were tentative and Newport were lacking a sharpness about most of their play. Defensively they looked uncertain, perhaps missing Alex's leadership, in midfield Matty and Crox were working hard but there was little urgency or penetration out wide, and, on a day that the pitch dictated hitting the front a little earlier than normal there was no obvious target.
Not much happened until Newport failed to clear an awkwardly bouncing ball on the edge of their box and a Sundon player swept it past Dan for the opener half way through the first period.
This stung the visitors into life and Brandon latched onto a ball over the top from Matty but saw his shot role agonisingly wide of the far post.
Before half time Alex and Tom were introduced to add a more physical presence.
Half-time: Sundon Park Rangers 1 – 0 Newport
During the interval, the riot act was read loudly enough to be heard in MK.
The response was greater urgency and a more direct approach from Newport but a combination of the bobbly conditions and some determined defending meant that chances were still few and far between.
Eben, Kevin and Johnny were all introduced and Kevin's direct running caused some panic in the home side's defence and a chance or two began to appear. For the most part though the home keeper wasn't really tested.
Then some defensive indecision and lack of communication between Dan and Westie gave the home team's striker the chance to roll the ball from a narrow angle into an empty net.
Newport were really having to chase the game now and went to 3 at the back. Blakey put one late chance over the top but apart from that Newport never really looked liked scoring.
Full-time: Sundon Park Rangers 2 – 0 Newport
This result certainly puts a dent in Newport's quest to retain the Chiltern League title but with 5 games left including home and away meetings with league leaders Leighton Town, it's just about still possible.
They say you can judge a side by how it responds to defeat, so … come on Newport!
