Chiltern League Div 1 – Under 16s
Match Report: 27th March 2011:
Bedford Town A 0 v 2 Newport Pagnell Town
Half-time: 0 – 1
Newport Squad: Jack Allen, Steve Blood, Alex Collard, Jack Croxford, Matty Cullis, Eben Darko, Kevin Feldman, Johnny Harman, Luke Parker, Liam Scott, Dan Shaw, Mitchell Tofts, Jack Westbrook.
Fun in the sun
With the sun shining on the leafy surroundings of Bedford Park and an impromptu “United Nations v The Rest of the World” game on the pitch next door, it was easy to imagine an end of season feel to this game. In fact of course there was plenty at stake with Newport still in with an outside chance of retaining their Chiltern League Champions tag.
The early exchanges didn't do much to awaken the travelling green army supporters from their lazy sunny afternoon mood. The pitch was again pretty lively and a few of the lads seemed to have their boots on the wrong feet.
Gradually some pattern started to emerge and it was Newport, kicking down the slope, who began to exert some pressure on the home defence. Long range efforts from Crox, Kevin and Jack Allen all failed to trouble the keeper but were a good indication of the balance of the game.
After 26 minutes a Newport corner was cleared to the edge of the box, where Crox took a second to steady himself and show great technique to drive the ball first time into the far corner.
The hosts responded with some good play in midfield but although they created a couple of half chances, they weren't able to convert them.
Half-time: Bedford 0 – 1 Newport
The second half had a more end to end feel to it with both sides looking a little stretched at times.
Bedford went close with a free kick that had Dan scrambling but went just wide, and they also hit the post from open play when they sliced through the visitors' defence a little too easily.
At the other end Matty was unlucky not to be rewarded for another energetic and committed display in centre midfield, when he climbed high at the far post to meet Mitch's corner, only to see it scrambled off the line.
Eben and Johnny came on and both caused problems for the Bedford defence with their strong running with and without the ball.
With the game stretched an incisive through ball found Liam with space inside the box and he duly turned and crashed a shot high into the net.
Bedford didn't give up though and there was definitely a feeling that if they could get one goal back then it would be a nervy last few minutes for the visitors.
In the end though Newport were able to run down the clock and the points were theirs.
Full-time: Bedford 0 – 2 Newport
Still nowhere near their best, Newport managed to produce two quality strikes and probably just about deserved the points.
Big test next week against runaway league leaders Leighton Town. May the real Newport please step forward.
Come on Newport!
