UCL Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 2 Peterborough Northern Star 1
Tuesday, 29 March 2011
Newport avenged their recent League Knockout defeat by Star with this league success.
Both sides started well with end to end attacking football which was also to be a very physical game.
And it was PNS that had the early chance when a shot from the edge of the area was deflected onto the post.
The Swans replied and came close when Rocco shot from the side, his shot going just wide of the goal.
PNS then found themselves in space when the forward broke through the Newport defence but Dean Buss got back and made a superb challenge to denied Peterborough a goal.
The Swans pushed PNS back but couldn’t find a way through to the PNS goal. Various crosses went a miss, Darren Lynch Heading over then Armstrong also headed wide.
Josh Moreman's 32nd minute goal broke the dead lock from a well worked goal. PNS catching the Swans out on the break, the ball was passed down the right to Moremans who found space then slotting the ball under Warnecki.
Then just after the interval Rocco burst down the centre but then was fouled in the area. Daren dykes hauled the Swans level from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half.
PNS battled hard in the second half but found an more improved Swans in the second half. dykes almost added his second forcing a good save at of the PNS keeper.
PNS had a great chance but the shot from the forward was blocked by the Newport defence. Then two golden chances came PNS way but both times they resulting shot was scuffed over or wide.
Newport won it through Darren Lynch with just a minute remaining after Newport pressured PNS. The Swans catching PNS out on the break, dykes passing the ball to Lynch who cooley lifted the ball over the PNS keeper to give the Swans the much needed 3 points.
This was a vital win for Newport as they are now level on games with Long Buckby but are now 4 points in front of them.
I also thought that the referee and linesman did a good job in this tough physical game.
Newport: Paul Warnecki, Scott Mulkern, Keith Williams, John Thorpe, Dean Buss, Liam Smyth (Sean McBride), Daren dykes, Richard Armstrong (Matt Broomes), Vinny Shrieves, Darren Lynch, Luigi Rocco.
