Chiltern League Cup Semi Final
Match Report: 17th April 2011:
Newport Pagnell Town 0 v 0 Crawley Green
After Extra Time
Crawley Green won 6-5 on penalties
Newport Squad: Jack Allen, Brandon Banda, Tom Blake, Steve Blood, Alex Collard, Jack Croxford, Matty Cullis, Eben Darko, Kevin Feldman, Luke Parker, Liam Scott, Dan Shaw, Mitchell Tofts, Jack Westbrook.
As the two previous encounters between these two sides this season ended one-all and nil-nil, no-one was anticipating a goal-fest this time around.
As expected, it was a tight game with defences on top and very few clear-cut chances.
Newport suffered an early blow when Mitch fell awkwardly and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken bone in his wrist. He was replaced on the left of midfield by Steve.
Crawley edged the first half with their numbers 4 and 8 bossing midfield. As always they were quick to get the ball forward but on the whole Alex and Westie dealt with everything that was thrown at them reasonably comfortably.
The closest Newport came to breaking the deadlock was early in the second half when Blakey beat the keeper only to see a defender get back to clear off the line. At the other end Dan had to make one fine save at full stretch to his left.
As the game wore on, Newport gradually managed to get a degree of control in midfield and more of the game was being played in the visitors half. Neither side really looked capable of landing a knock blow though.
Extra time flew by and so it came down to penalties. And despite a brave effort by all concerned, it was Crawley Green who won the shoot out 6-5. Good luck to them in the final.
And so Newport's last chance of a trophy had slipped away. Over the course of the season the team clearly hasn't been as consistent as last year, and while at times in the autumn their football was sublime, they have come up a little short in the final analysis.
