F.A. Vase
First Round Proper
Henley Town 0 Newport Pagnell Town 1
Saturday, 22 October 2011
Newport Pagnell got to back to winning ways with a tight victory over their Hellenic League opponents.
The Swans progressed with a lone Daren dykes goal ten minutes into the second half.
A scoreless first half saw very little chances created by either side but it was the Swans that created the better half chances. The first came early from Scott Mulkern but his long range effort went wide of the goal.
Henley Town forced a good save from Josh who firmly held the ball from a low hard shot.
A couple more chances fell to Newport but the effort from Vinnie and dykes went sailing over the goal.
Henleys number tall number 9 was lucky to stay on the pitch after a yellow card for a foul on Josh then and very late challenge on Shan which went un punished!
The second half was better in the sense of more chances were created and we saw some better football. The goal cam 10 minutes into the second half when dykes free kick hit the wall, dykes hit the re-bound first time which found its way though the Henley defence into the goal.
dykes could have added a second when he broke down the right side, but his shot went wide of the far post.
There was calls for a red card after a Henley defender brought Lawless down when he was more or less through on goal (its was debatable whether a defender could have got back in time).
The Henley keeper went up for a corner to try and help find a late winner. He apparently did this in a previous game and scored from a header so Newport were aware of the danger. But on this occasion the Swans cleared the danger and the keeper ended up getting caught in no mans land. The result was the goalkeeper brought Lawless down on the edge of the area but no further action was taken against the keeper.
After late pressure from Henley Newport held on to their narrow victory to take them into the 2nd round of the Vase.
