The opening fixture of the new calendar year saw the visit of Brackley Athletic to Newport Pagnell and a game that was likely to prove a tough challenge for the Swans. Brackley pressed in the opening minutes but Omar proved confident in defence to keep them at bay.
A good pass from Scott set Cormac off on a good run only to see his effort saved by the Brackley keeper. On 5 minutes Tom made a penetrating break down the left and his lovely weighted cross went inches in front of the outstretched right foot of Scott.
Jason proved strong in the Newport ranks as he marshaled the back and midfield area with good support from Alex. A superb pass from Alex on 10 minutes found Cormac who forced a Newport corner from which they continued to apply pressure. A quickly taken throw-in 2 minutes later found Jason who tracked across the edge of the goal area before unleashing a shot to open the scoring with a well taken goal.
Brackley responded well and attacked down their left unleashing a fierce shot which was well saved by Bash in goal. A few changes in the Newport personnel made no difference to the pressure being applied on the Brackley goal. When called upon Daniel proved strong in defence making several notable defensive blocks.
A great through ball from Callum set-up Harry who almost broke through the stubborn Brackley defence. Another Newport attack was quickly turned into defence when Brackley struck back and scored a super breakaway goal to draw level. Seconds before half time Newport strode forward with Harry setting up Gavin, but he was thwarted by the very competent Brackley keeper.
Newport opened well in the second half with Gavin causing the Brackley defence problems. On 35 minutes Newport came close when Harry put in a cross which was met by a shot from Scott which the keeper held. This part of the game was well balanced and Brackley were keen to demonstrate that they were capable of scoring a second if not for Daniel making some good tackles at the back.
Jason continued to look strong and a pass to Cormac who combined with Harry almost turned the scoreline in Newports favour. A minute later and the ball fell to Gavin who forced another top drawer save from the outstanding Brackley keeper.
Further changes in the Newport personnel saw Callum and Harry pressing forward and were really starting to apply the pressure resulting in 3 successive corners but they just couldn’t find the killer touch.
56 minutes had passed when Omar collected the ball just inside his own half and went on a run down the right of the park. A shimmy inside provided Omar with the opportunity to shoot with the ball flying across the goal area going in-off the left hand post for Newports second.
Brackley restarted with the ball reaching Bash in the Newport goal. Some quick thinking by the Newport keeper resulted in the ball falling in front of Tom who made a workmanlike break but again was thwarted by the keeper and the ball went out for a corner. The corner fell to Cormac whose cross was collected and put away at the second attempt by Omar to make the score 3 – 1 to Newport.
This was a good game, and whilst the goals came late on and Brackley would have been naturally disappointed with the result, both teams deserve credit for providing an entertaining match.
