UCL - Premier Division
Newport Pagnell Town 2 - 2 Desborough Town
Saturday, 08 March 2008
This was a point we were glad of when the final whistle was called. The game was halted for 10 minutes a minute in to the game when there was a small clash between Vinnie Shrieves and the Desborough goal keeper. Vinnie tried to block a clearance on the edge of the area from the goalkeeper when their feet collided. The goal keeper had a suspected broken ankle so an ambulance was called out. I believe after an inspection of the player the paramedic ruled out a broken ankle. Hope he makes a full recovery and is back in football asap.
Back to the game - As a result of the injury Desborough had to put a outfield player in goal as they didnt have a spare on the bench. They could have taken the lead a few minutes in but a goal mouth scramble assured they didn't! Newport took the lead 30 minutes in when Rob McDonald turned the defender in the area only for Rob to be tripped. James Fletcher converted the penalty. Desborough piled the pressure on and were unlucky not to grab an equaliser straight away. But they were only down for nine minutes when Michael Byrne grabbed the equaliser.
Half Time 1-1
Desborough turned the pressure up which paid off for them when they took advantage of a poor back header, Paul Casey nudging the ball over the advancing Aussie keeper. Once again Desborough wasted a number of chances with some poor finishing. Their outfield makeshift goalkeeper injured his back after Vinnie rolled around on the ground with him, so yet another out field player had to play goal keeper. After they made a triple subsitution, Newport looked more lively going forward. This change paid off when Scottie swung in a curling free kick for Drew Mitten to toe end into the net past the stand-in goal keeper 4 minutes from time.
Full Time 2-2.
